Life is beautiful.
A butterfly sat on a piece of straw in the trickling creek. A red wasp landed nearby.
A small frog turned his back on the two, so that he could enjoy his little pool in the rock of the creek.
A dragon fly hovered overhead.
The butterfly fluttered, the wasp flew away, and another butterfly joined for a 30 second dance. Then flew away.
But like the butterfly dancer, life is fleeting.
The wise person plans for the time when it will end.
Preparing a Will
Preparing a will is one of the most important things you should do.
My brother had the philosophy that “he who dies with the most ‘toys’ wins.” But what happens to your “toys” after you’re gone? Unfortunately, you can’t take them with you.
Consider the fact that over the span of your lifetime, however long it may be, you will be accumulating things. What you accumulate could include a business, one or more cars, a house, a boat, jewelry, gold and silver, works of art, and real estate. What happens to all of your possessions when you have passed on? You make this determination when you make a will.
When you prepare a will, you name one or more individuals to manage your estate, and you provide for the distribution of your personal and real property after you are gone.
If you die without a will, the state will determine who gets your property.
A will is a legal declaration.
It contains your instructions regarding how you wish to distribute your property when you have passed on. When accepted by a probate court, your will is proof of your intent to transfer your property to the individuals (generally your family) or organizations named in the will.
A will is the only way that you can “speak from beyond the grave,” to ensure that your estate is properly settled, all taxes and debts are paid, and your assets (“toys”) are distributed according to your desires. A person who has not prepared a will is likely to have his or her estate handled by the courts rather than according to their wishes.
Rest in Peace shows you what a will looks like and contains valuable information you should know before you prepare a will. There is a will template in the book you can use to create your own will as well as a downloadable will format located on this website.
